SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The leaders of North Korea and South Korea met face-to-face today for the first time in over a decade, in a historic summit that could have major implications for the future of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met at the border village of Panmunjom, which is located in the demilitarized zone between the two countries. The two leaders shook hands and smiled for the cameras before entering a building for their talks.
The summit is the first between the leaders of the two Koreas since 2007, and it comes at a time of heightened tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. In recent months, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests, and has threatened to develop a nuclear-tipped missile that could reach the United States.
